Hillary Klug is one of those rare artists who makes impossible things look easy. She plays the violin and tap dances at the same time—yes, you read that right! Hillary grew up in Fayetteville, Tennessee, and didn’t come from a family of musicians. But her mom supported her dream from the start. Hillary started dancing at just 8 years old, when she took her first clogging class. It was then that she began her musical journey. When she turned 13, she picked up a violin for the first time. Even though her family wasn’t very fond of music, Hillary’s mother still got her the violin and that’s when her love for music started to really grow.

Things weren’t easy, at first. Hillary struggled with violin lessons, taking over three months to learn “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” She felt like giving up, but instead of quitting, she decided to try another way. She met a “fiddle” teacher at a local dance, and that’s when everything changed. This teacher helped Hillary find her style and showed her the world of old-time music. “Nobody in my family plays music or dances and I had no idea that the world of ‘oldtime music and dance’ existd, but the more I learned, the more I was drawn to it,” Hillary says.
As she continued to learn and perform, Hillary became known in the “old-time” music community. She even became the National Buck Dancing Champion and the Kentucky State Dance Champion. Not bad for someone who started dancing and playing music only a few years earlier!
Now, Hillary is performing all over the US, showcasing her amazing talent. She opened a YouTube channel in 2018, and it didn’t take long for her videos to go viral. One of her most popular videos is her performance of “Cotton Eyed Joe,” where she combines her fast footwork with her fiddle playing. Her channel has now gained over 18 million views!
