He Danced Alone In The Dark With A Giant Picture Of Michael Jackson Watching Him.

Before anyone saw Jaafar Jackson on screen, before the trailers, before the reviews, there was just a young man alone in a quiet house in Encino, dancing in the dark.

Jaafar didn’t prepare for this role in a gym or a rehearsal studio. HE MOVED BACK INTO HAYVENHURST, THE JACKSON FAMILY HOME WHERE MICHAEL GREW UP after leaving Gary, Indiana, and where some of the most important music of the 20th century was first created.

The recording studio in that house is where Michael built the demos for the Thriller album. Jaafar spent months inside it, starting with the small soundproofed recording booth, using it as a practice space before eventually moving to the dining room, the only room in the house with enough floor space to really move.

He Wanted To Feel Michael With Him

That dining room is where the cutout was. Jaafar set up floor mirrors along the walls and placed a life-size image of Michael beside him while he learned the movements. He said it was a reminder. HE SAID IT FELT LIKE MICHAEL WAS ALWAYS WATCHING.

While sharing his experience, he mentioned that sometimes the house would get too quiet. And then HE’D BLAST MICHAEL’S MUSIC THROUGH THE ROOMS UNTIL THEY FELT FULL AGAIN.

He would dim the lights, set up loudspeakers, and dance nonstop. Before each session, he read the same quote on the wall, every single day, until it became part of the ritual. He described it as a springboard, something that flipped a switch before the work began.

“I Wanted To Prove That I Could Do This” – Says Jaafar

The way he prepared for the role shows how badly he wanted to live up to Michael. For him, it was something closer to communion.

HE TALKED ABOUT FEELING MICHAEL’S PRESENCE AT UNEXPECTED MOMENTS, about pausing mid-dance to take in where he was and what he was doing, about gratitude that kept stopping him in his tracks.

By the time the movie started shooting, Jaafar had not only learned the moves but had lived inside the man’s memory for months. In the same rooms, under the same roof, with that giant image watching him every step of the way.
