Why Adele Stopped The Grammy Awards To Honor Her Friend George Michael

Imagine being just ten years old. You hear a brand new song on the radio. It completely changes your life. For a young girl named Adele, that magical song was “Fastlove” by George Michael.

She was instantly captivated. She saw his deep vulnerability. She loved his amazing, soulful voice. She was a massive fan long before she ever became a global superstar.

Years later, Adele grew up. She became a massive music queen herself. But she never forgot her childhood hero. Soon, the two British stars actually became true friends.

They shared a very deep, beautiful bond. George even flew all the way from Australia just to hand Adele a special award in 2012! He loved her music, too. He secretly warmed up his own voice by singing her songs. They completely understood the heavy pressure of fame.

Adele loved that George was a true, honest icon. She later said, “When people are that famous, it’s not fakeness in a bad way — they put on an alter ego to protect themselves. I understand and appreciate that.” But through it all, George always stayed real to her.

Sadly, George passed away on Christmas Day in 2016. A few months later, on February 13, 2017, the world gathered for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. The show producers wanted a big tribute. George’s family had one strict rule. They only wanted Adele to sing for him.

Adele stood on the giant stage. A massive screen showed beautiful pictures of George. She started singing a slow, heartbreaking version of “Fastlove.” But then, something went wrong. About 30 seconds into the song, Adele realized she was off-key.

Most singers would just ignore the mistake and keep going. But Adele was different. She stopped the entire live show.

She cursed in pure frustration. She looked right at the band and told them to stop playing. She bravely told the massive crowd, “I can’t mess this up for him.” George was simply too important to her. She had to get it absolutely perfect.

She started the song over from the very beginning. It was pure, beautiful magic. When she finished the final note, the crowd stood up and cheered loudly. Adele left the stage in heavy tears. She gave her sweet friend the perfect goodbye.

True greatness is not about being perfectly flawless on the very first try. True greatness is having the brave courage to stop, admit your mistake, and start over because you love someone too much to give them anything less than your absolute best.
