At the beginning of 1956, Elvis Presley was just 21 years old. He already had a growing following in the South, but millions of Americans still had no idea who he was. By the end of that same year, everything had changed.

Elvis had produced an extraordinary run of hit records, topped the charts, appeared on America’s biggest television programs, released two hugely successful albums and even entered Hollywood.

Graceland’s official history credits Elvis with five No. 1 pop singles during 1956. It was one of the fastest rises to superstardom popular music had ever seen. The breakthrough began with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Elvis recorded the song in Nashville on January 10, 1956, only two days after his 21st birthday.

Elvis Presley Performs “Heartbreak Hotel” in 1956

A few months later came “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.”

Then Elvis entered RCA’s New York studio on July 2, 1956, and recorded two songs on the same day that would become inseparable from his early career: “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.” Together, the songs dominated American radio during the second half of the year.

But Elvis was not becoming famous through records alone. Television turned him into a national obsession. His performances on The Milton Berle Show caused controversy because of the way he moved onstage.

Then, on September 9, 1956, Elvis appeared for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. An enormous television audience tuned in. That night, Elvis performed hits including “Don’t Be Cruel” and introduced viewers to another song that had not even been officially released yet: “Love Me Tender.” Demand for the song exploded. When RCA released it later that month, “Love Me Tender” climbed to No. 1 and remained there for weeks.

His debut album, Elvis Presley, reached No. 1 and spent 10 weeks at the top. His second album also reached No. 1. He was appearing on major television programs including Stage Show, The Milton Berle Show, The Steve Allen Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.

And before the year was over, Elvis conquered another industry. In November 1956, his first movie, Love Me Tender, opened in theaters.

Think about how quickly that happened.

Billboard maintained several separate charts based on record sales, radio airplay and jukebox popularity, which is why different sources can sometimes count the No. 1 records of 1956 differently.

But there is no disagreement about the bigger picture. 1956 was the year Elvis Presley exploded. He started it as a rising young performer. He ended it as one of the most famous entertainers in America. And he was only 21 years old when it happened.

Long before millions of people knew his voice, Elvis Presley was not considered an exceptional music student at school.

In fact, Elvis later remembered the experience much more harshly.

He said he had “failed music.”

That statement became one of the great ironies of his life.

Because the quiet Memphis teenager who believed he had failed the one subject that should have suited him would eventually become one of the most famous singers in music history.

But the surviving school record adds an interesting twist.

According to Elvis Presley’s official Graceland website, Elvis actually received a C in music during eighth grade at Humes High School.

His other marks that year included an A in language and several Bs and Cs.

So technically, the famous story that Elvis received a failing grade appears to be different from the surviving record.

Elvis himself, however, remembered it as a failure.

Elvis Presley’s Years at Humes High School

Music already meant far more to Elvis than his school grade suggested.

He had received his first guitar as a child and spent years listening intensely to country, gospel, blues and rhythm and blues.

But he had little formal musical education.

Elvis largely learned by listening, watching other musicians and playing by ear rather than through conventional training.

He was also extremely shy.

During his early school years, classmates remembered him as quiet and different from the other boys.

His taste in music and clothing could make him stand out, and he was sometimes teased because of it.

One story from his school years captures that tension perfectly.

Accounts say a music teacher questioned his aptitude for singing.

Elvis responded by bringing his guitar to school and performing to prove what he could do.

It was an early glimpse of something that would define his entire career:

Elvis did not necessarily fit the conventional idea of what a singer was supposed to be.

Then came a turning point.

On April 9, 1953, just months before graduating, Elvis appeared in Humes High School’s annual talent show.

He walked onto the stage with his guitar and performed “Till I Waltz Again with You.”

For many classmates, it was the first time they realized the quiet boy walking through their halls could really sing.

The reaction surprised even Elvis.

He later remembered that people at school had barely known he sang before that performance.

Afterward, he suddenly became far more popular.

Only a few months later, Elvis graduated from Humes.

That summer, he walked into the Memphis Recording Service and paid to record an acetate containing “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin.”

Within another year, he was recording at Sun Records.

And within only a few years, the teenager who had received a C in school music was appearing on national television before audiences numbering in the tens of millions.

Eventually, Elvis Presley would sell enormous numbers of records, influence generations of performers and become permanently associated with the title King of Rock and Roll.

That is what makes the school story so memorable.

The grade did not predict what came next.

Traditional music training did not predict it either.

Elvis developed his voice by absorbing the music around him and finding a style that did not sound quite like anyone else.

**School may not have recognized what Elvis Presley would become.

The rest of the world eventually did.**

When Benjamin Keough died at just 27 years old in July 2020, Lisa Marie Presley was confronted with a loss she struggled to accept.

Benjamin was her only son.

And according to Lisa Marie’s posthumous memoir, she simply was not emotionally prepared to say goodbye to him.

So she did something almost nobody outside her family knew about at the time.

Lisa Marie kept Benjamin’s body at her California home for approximately two months before he was buried.

The extraordinary detail was revealed in From Here to the Great Unknown, the memoir Lisa Marie began before her death and her daughter Riley Keough later completed.

But for Lisa Marie, keeping Benjamin close was not meant to be something shocking.

It was part of how she grieved.

She remembered going through something similar when her own father, Elvis Presley, died in 1977.

Lisa Marie was only nine years old then.

Having Elvis remain at Graceland for a period after his death had allowed his young daughter to see him, sit near him and begin understanding that he was really gone.

Decades later, she wanted that same time with her own son.

Riley Keough Discusses Lisa Marie’s Grief After Benjamin’s Death

According to the memoir, Lisa Marie worked with an understanding funeral-home owner who agreed to allow Benjamin to be brought to her home.

He was kept in a separate bedroom in a casita on the property.

Riley explained that Benjamin was kept on dry ice, while Lisa Marie wrote that the room itself had to remain at approximately 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

But the arrangement was not simply about delaying a funeral.

Lisa Marie was struggling with one enormous decision.

Where should Benjamin be buried?

She considered Hawaii, where the family had strong personal connections.

The other possibility was Graceland.

Choosing Graceland would mean placing Benjamin beside the grandfather he had so often been compared with, Elvis Presley.

Lisa Marie later admitted that this indecision was one reason the process lasted so long.

But there was something even deeper happening.

She had become accustomed to having Benjamin near her.

She could enter the room, spend time with him and continue feeling like his mother before accepting the finality of burial.

Riley later told Oprah Winfrey that her mother wanted control over what happened to Benjamin after his death and did not like the thought of him being somewhere else while the family decided what to do.

To outsiders, the decision might have seemed impossible to understand.

Riley acknowledged that herself.

But she explained that having enough time to say goodbye was extremely important to Lisa Marie.

There was even one unusual moment during those two months that showed how differently the family was processing the loss.

Benjamin had tattoos honoring his mother and sister.

Lisa Marie and Riley decided they wanted tattoos matching his.

Because they wanted the placement and lettering to be accurate, a tattoo artist was brought to the house and shown Benjamin’s tattoos directly.

Riley later acknowledged just how surreal that moment had been.

Eventually, however, the family felt it was time.

Benjamin was laid to rest at Graceland’s Meditation Garden, near Elvis Presley.

Years later, another Presley would join him there.

After Lisa Marie died in January 2023, she was buried beside her son.

The story of those two months became public only after Lisa Marie was gone, when Riley completed the memoir using recordings her mother had made before her death.

And Riley’s explanation changes the meaning of what could otherwise sound like a shocking headline.

For Lisa Marie, this was not about refusing to acknowledge Benjamin’s death.

It was about delaying the moment when she would have to physically let her only son go.

She had already lost him. She simply was not ready to lose his presence too.

On October 9, 1973, Elvis and Priscilla Presley entered a courthouse in Santa Monica as husband and wife.

A short time later, they walked back outside legally divorced.

But instead of leaving separately or turning away from each other, Elvis and Priscilla did something few people expected.

They walked out together, holding hands.

The photographs from that afternoon remain some of the most striking images from their entire relationship. Elvis wore dark sunglasses while Priscilla stayed close beside him. Los Angeles Times photographer George Fry captured the pair after the hearing and later remembered them coming down the hallway smiling and showing affection toward each other.

Their divorce marked the official end of a marriage that had begun more than six years earlier.

Elvis and Priscilla married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967, and their daughter Lisa Marie was born the following year. By 1972, however, the couple had separated, and their divorce was finalized the following October.

Elvis and Priscilla Leaving Court After Their Divorce

What happened outside the courthouse told a very different story from the bitter celebrity breakups people might expect.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Elvis and Priscilla emerged arm in arm, and Elvis gave his former wife a friendly kiss before they left. Fry had been tipped off that the couple would be appearing in court and ended up capturing the remarkable photographs almost entirely alone.

Some surviving images also show the pair holding hands as they left the Santa Monica courthouse.

Their marriage was finished, but their connection clearly was not.

Priscilla later described Elvis as remaining an important part of her life after the separation. She wrote that during his final years they had developed a friendship in which they could acknowledge mistakes from their marriage and even laugh about some of them.

That helps explain why the courthouse photographs still stand out more than five decades later.

They do not look like two people desperate to escape each other.

They show two people ending one chapter of their relationship while apparently refusing to erase everything that had come before it.

Their lives would continue separately, but Elvis and Priscilla remained connected through Lisa Marie and through a complicated history neither could simply leave behind.

And that is what made October 9, 1973 so unusual.

Elvis Presley walked into court married to Priscilla.

He walked out divorced.

Yet one of the first things they did as former husband and wife was reach for each other’s hand.

For years, Michael Jackson faced endless questions about how much cosmetic surgery he had undergone.

Michael repeatedly pushed back against the speculation.

In his 1988 autobiography Moonwalk, he acknowledged having his nose altered twice and having a cleft added to his chin.

“That is it,” he wrote.

Years later, sitting across from Oprah Winfrey in 1993, Michael gave essentially the same message.

When Oprah asked how much plastic surgery he had undergone, Michael said it was “very, very little” and suggested the number could be counted on two fingers.

But nearly two decades later, someone extremely close to Michael gave a different account.

His mother, Katherine Jackson.

Katherine Jackson Discusses Michael’s Cosmetic Surgery With Oprah

On November 8, 2010, Katherine appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for an extensive interview about her son, who had died the previous year.

During their conversation, Oprah brought up Michael’s changing appearance and reminded Katherine that Michael had previously described undergoing only a small number of procedures.

Katherine responded directly.

According to her, Michael had undergone more procedures than he publicly acknowledged.

She believed her son had simply been embarrassed to discuss the true extent of it.

Katherine also described Michael as being deeply insecure about his appearance from a young age.

She remembered him complaining about his nose as a teenager and said she repeatedly tried to convince him that there was nothing wrong with the way he looked.

Eventually, Michael decided to have his nose changed.

According to Katherine, however, it did not stop with that first procedure.

As his appearance continued changing, Katherine became concerned.

She told Oprah that she had heard people could become addicted to plastic surgery and said she believed that was what had happened to Michael.

That point is important: it was Katherine’s personal assessment, not a medical diagnosis.

She said she repeatedly told her son that enough was enough.

At one point, she even approached one of his plastic surgeons herself.

Katherine recalled asking the doctor that if Michael returned wanting further work on his nose, he should essentially leave it unchanged rather than make it smaller again.

Michael had also strongly denied many specific rumors about his face.

During his 1993 Oprah interview, he said he had never had his cheekbones, eyes or lips surgically altered and criticized reports that attributed virtually every change in his appearance to surgery.

That leaves an important distinction.

Michael never denied having cosmetic surgery.

He openly acknowledged certain procedures.

What Katherine challenged after his death was how limited his public account had been.

She did not provide a precise number of operations, and her comments should not be treated as a complete medical record.

But she was unequivocal about one thing:

In Katherine Jackson’s account, Michael had undergone more cosmetic procedures than he had publicly admitted.

More than seventeen years after Michael told Oprah his surgery had been minimal, his own mother sat across from the same interviewer and gave the public a very different version of the story.

To millions of people, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop.

He filled stadiums, created some of the most famous music videos ever made and lived a life that seemed completely removed from anything ordinary.

But when Paris Jackson was asked what her father was really like at home, she remembered something much simpler.

Michael cooked breakfast for his children himself.

And according to Paris, he was surprisingly good at it.

Speaking with Oprah Winfrey in November 2010, Paris described a side of Michael that most of the public had rarely seen.

She said she felt people did not understand what kind of father he had been.

Then she revealed something that even Oprah found surprising.

Michael Jackson loved to cook.

Paris Jackson Remembers Michael as a Father

When Oprah asked what Michael could make, Paris immediately mentioned one dish.

French toast.

She said her father made the “best French toast in the world” and remembered him making wonderful breakfasts for the family. When Oprah asked whether Michael cooked for the children often, Paris answered yes.

It was a remarkably ordinary memory involving one of the most famous people who had ever lived.

There were no screaming crowds.

No flashing cameras.

No stage costumes or rehearsals.

Just a father in the kitchen preparing breakfast for his children.

Paris even described Michael simply as a “normal dad.”

That ordinary family life appears to have been important to him.

Paris said Michael tried to raise Prince, Paris and Blanket without allowing his celebrity identity to dominate their childhood. She joked that keeping them unaware of exactly how famous he was did not work particularly well.

The children remembered other simple moments too.

Prince spoke about waking early while the family was in Bahrain and walking along the beach.

Paris remembered sitting on the roof of the Luxor in Las Vegas, looking at the city lights while eating candy and drinking soda.

Those memories offer a very different picture from Michael Jackson’s public life.

Fans knew the moonwalk.

They knew Thriller, Billie Jean and the enormous concerts.

His children remembered breakfasts, walks and quiet evenings together.

And when Oprah finally asked Paris what she missed most about her father, she did not choose one particular memory.

Her answer was simply:

“Everything.”

That may be why the French toast story continues to resonate.

For the rest of the world, Michael Jackson was an entertainer whose performances became part of music history.

For Paris, Prince and Bigi, some of the memories that mattered most happened when there was no audience at all.

Sometimes Michael Jackson was simply Dad, standing in the kitchen and making breakfast for his children.

On November 12, 1993, Michael Jackson made an announcement few fans expected to hear.

He was in the middle of his massive Dangerous World Tour, performing for enormous audiences across the globe.

But Michael suddenly announced that the remaining concerts were being canceled.

The reason was intensely personal.

He said he had become addicted to prescription pain medication and needed professional treatment.

Michael delivered the news through a taped statement released by his publicist.

He explained that he had originally started taking pain medication following reconstructive surgery connected to the scalp injuries he suffered years earlier during the filming of a Pepsi commercial.

According to Michael, the medication had initially been used sparingly.

But during 1993, he said his reliance on it increased as he dealt with physical pain, the exhausting demands of touring and the intense pressure surrounding allegations being made against him at the time, which he denied.

Michael Jackson’s 1993 Statement About His Health

Michael did not try to present the situation as something he could simply push through.

He publicly acknowledged that he needed help.

“My friends and doctors advised me to seek professional guidance immediately,” he said, adding that it was time to acknowledge his need for treatment and regain his health.

That meant bringing the Dangerous World Tour to an abrupt end.

Michael said completing the tour was no longer possible and canceled all remaining dates. At the time, another performance had been scheduled in Puerto Rico only days later.

It was an extraordinary admission from one of the most famous entertainers on Earth.

Michael was only 35 years old, and the Dangerous era had already taken him through Europe, Asia, Latin America and other parts of the world.

Now the stage had to come second.

His lawyers later said he was expected to undergo approximately six to eight weeks of treatment outside the United States, although the location was deliberately kept private.

Elizabeth Taylor also played an important role during the crisis.

Taylor later said Michael’s doctor contacted her and asked whether she could help. She traveled to Mexico City and said she believed he needed specialized medical attention.

Weeks later, Michael spoke publicly again.

In a televised statement from Neverland on December 22, 1993, he said he had remained outside the country receiving treatment for what he then described as a “dependency on pain medication.”

That distinction is worth remembering.

Contemporary reports and Michael’s November statement used the word “addiction,” while Michael himself later described it as a dependency on prescribed pain medication.

Either way, his message in 1993 was unusually direct.

At the height of a huge international tour, Michael Jackson publicly acknowledged that his use of pain medication had become a serious problem.

And instead of continuing to perform, he canceled the rest of the tour and entered treatment.

On August 27, 1994, Neverland Valley Ranch was supposed to be filled with nothing but celebration.

Michael Jackson had opened his private estate for the wedding of his close friend Miko Brando and Karen Hamilton.

Miko, the son of actor Marlon Brando, had become part of Michael’s trusted circle and worked with him for years.

For the wedding, Michael reportedly took on one of the most important roles of all.

He was Miko’s best man.

The celebration was private enough that even some details surrounding Michael’s appearance were kept secret. Shortly afterward, the Los Angeles Times reported on the wedding attire created for Miko and his attendants while noting that the designer would not reveal what Michael wore.

But sometime during that day, the mood changed completely.

Michael received devastating news involving his own family.

His former sister-in-law Delores “Dee Dee” Jackson, the ex-wife of his brother Tito Jackson and mother of Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson, had died that morning.

She was only 39 years old.

Miko Brando and Karen Hamilton’s Neverland Wedding

Early reports said Dee Dee had drowned in the swimming pool at the Ladera Heights home of her boyfriend, Donald Bohana.

According to the account Bohana gave authorities at the time, the two had been in the pool during the early morning hours. He said he later discovered Dee Dee at the bottom of the deep end, pulled her out and called emergency services.

She was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Jackson family timelines recount that after Michael learned what had happened, he left the Neverland wedding, while members of the Jackson family gathered to support Tito and his three sons.

At first, authorities described Dee Dee’s death as an apparent accidental drowning.

But the case would eventually become far more disturbing.

Months later, the Los Angeles County coroner reported injuries that supported the possibility of an “assisted drowning.” The death was investigated further, and Bohana was eventually arrested and prosecuted.

In 1998, Bohana was convicted of second-degree murder in Dee Dee’s death and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. He maintained that her death had been an accident, while prosecutors argued that she had been assaulted before drowning.

For Michael, however, all of that came later.

On August 27, 1994, he only knew that a joyful day at Neverland had suddenly been interrupted by terrible news from his family.

One moment he was standing beside a close friend on one of the happiest days of his life.

The next, Michael was leaving the celebration after learning that the mother of his three nephews was gone.

It became one of those strange days in Michael Jackson’s life when two completely opposite emotions existed only hours apart.

Neverland began the day hosting a wedding.

By the end of it, Michael Jackson’s attention had shifted entirely toward a grieving family.

On 2 March 1988, Michael Jackson performed live on television for the first time in five years at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The last time had been the night he did the moonwalk. Expectations were not small.

He arrived at the 30th Grammy Awards with four nominations for Bad. He won nothing. Reports from the night describe him as visibly deflated — he had genuinely hoped Bad would beat the records Thriller set.

But what he did on that stage is still talked about.

Michael Jackson – The Way You Make Me Feel and Man In The Mirror 30th Annual Grammy 1988

It began with the lights going down and a silhouette appearing behind a white screen — the same trick he used to open shows on the Bad tour. He stood completely still, hat tipped over his eyes, and glided slowly from one pose to another as the screen rose.

Then he did something with “The Way You Make Me Feel” that he never did anywhere else. He sang the opening dramatically slowed down, in a lower key, mimed putting out a cigarette on the floor — and his video co-star Tatiana Thumbtzen walked across the stage in front of him. Then the beat kicked in, he threw the hat, four dancers joined him, and he performed a variation on the choreography that exists in no other recording.

Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror – 35th Annual Grammy Awards

Then the dancers left, and he sang “Man in the Mirror” with the New Hope Baptist Church Choir in blue gowns behind him, alongside Siedah Garrett — who co-wrote the song — and Andraé Crouch.

By the end, he was on his knees, and Crouch walked out to help him up and wipe his forehead, a gesture lifted straight from James Brown.

He got a standing ovation. He did not get a Grammy.

One thing to clear up, because it is constantly reported wrongly. Jackson did lose Record of the Year for “Man in the Mirror” to Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” — but that happened at the next ceremony, in 1989. Two separate nights, routinely merged into one.

On 24 February 1993, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Michael Jackson was given the Grammy Legend Award — one of the highest honors the recording industry hands out, reserved for artists whose influence has permanently changed music.

His sister Janet presented it.

And Michael, clearly delighted, walked up and immediately made a joke at his own expense — about one of the strangest rumors that had ever attached itself to him. “I hope this finally puts to rest another rumor that has been in the press for too many years. Me and Janet really are two different people!”

The room fell apart.

What followed was the longest acceptance speech of his life, and it turned into something nobody expected. He stopped being funny and started explaining himself.

He began with: “In the past month, I’ve gone from ‘where is he?’ to ‘here he is again.’” “It feels good to be thought of as a person, not as a personality.”

Grammy Legends Awards 1993 ‘- Super Bowl 1993’ Spectacular

He admitted he didn’t read what was written about him — and so didn’t know how strange the world thought he was. “When you grow up as I did, in front of one hundred million people since the age of five, you’re automatically different.”

Then came the part people still quote. “My childhood was completely taken away from me. There was no Christmas, there were no birthdays. It was not a normal childhood, nor the normal pleasures of childhood — those were exchanged for hard work, struggle and pain.”

And he made an argument out of it, rather than a complaint. He said he believed many of the world’s worst problems — inner-city crime, wars, terrorism, overcrowded prisons — come from the same root: children who had their childhoods taken from them.

He finished by thanking the children of the world, including the sick and the deprived, saying simply: “I am so sensitive to your pain.”

His date that night was Brooke Shields. Eight months later, the first allegations became public, and the man who had just said it felt good to be thought of as a person disappeared behind headlines again.
