Elvis kept everything in his wallet, and there’s one picture still inside

At Graceland, the big house in Memphis that Elvis Presley bought in 1957, there’s a woman whose whole job is to look after his things. Her name is Angie Marchese, and she runs the archives. That means she takes care of the clothes, the cars, the letters and the thousands of small objects the King of Rock and Roll left behind.

Ask her to pick a favorite and you might expect something flashy. A jumpsuit, maybe. A gold record. Instead she points to something small and plain.

His wallet.

“Elvis’s wallet is another one of my favorite artifacts because he kept everything in it,” she told the Southern lifestyle site StyleBlueprint back in 2023.

And she means everything. Open it up and you find the odds and ends of a real life. A movie ticket stub sits in there. So does a newspaper clipping, along with business cards that have phone numbers scribbled on them, the kind of thing any of us might shove in a pocket and forget.

It’s a strange, lovely thing to see. The most famous man in the world carried the same kind of clutter the rest of us do.

The reason so much of Elvis’s life is still around comes down to his father. Vernon Presley, who handled the family’s money, kept careful records of nearly everything they bought.

“So if Elvis bought something, we have the receipt, the check he paid for it with, and the thing itself,” Marchese said.

That’s part of why the wallet matters so much. It isn’t kept because it’s worth a fortune. It’s kept because it shows you the man, not the star.

And then there’s the picture.

Tucked in among the ticket stub and the phone numbers, Elvis kept one photo. It’s a picture of Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie.

That’s the one that stays with people. Of all the things Elvis could have carried, the one he kept closest was a picture of his daughter. Lisa Marie was his only child. She grew up at Graceland, and she passed away in 2023.

Marchese has gone through a great deal of what Elvis owned over the years. She’s handled the famous stage outfits and the jewelry and plenty of gold. But it’s the quiet things, the ones that show he was somebody’s dad, that seem to stick with her.

If you’ve ever cleaned out an old wallet and found a photo you forgot was in there, you know the feeling. It catches you for a second.
