Imagine being the biggest star in the world, yet the most polite person in the room. In April 1960, Elvis Presley did just that.
He had just spent two years away from home serving in the U.S. Army. People wondered if the famous “King of Rock and Roll” would act like a spoiled star when he returned. But during a quick train stop in Texas, Elvis proved he was still humble, sweet, and incredibly kind.
Elvis was riding a train to Hollywood to start making his very first movie after the Army, called G.I. Blues. While the train stopped, a local reporter jumped on to talk to him. Instead of being annoyed, Elvis welcomed him with a giant, warm smile. He spoke softly and listened carefully, showing everyone that fame had not changed his good heart.
During the short chat, the reporter asked Elvis how the other soldiers treated him in the Army. Elvis gave a beautiful answer. He said that at first people thought he would try to use his fame to avoid hard work. But once they saw he wanted to be just one of the boys, he made lifelong friends. He didn’t want special treatment; he just wanted to do his job.

The reporter also asked the question that every young girl in America wanted to know: Did Elvis have a girlfriend? Elvis laughed a shy, quiet laugh and said no. He told the reporter that he had not found his true love yet, but when he did, he wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret.
Little did he know that a young girl named Priscilla was waiting in his future!
Before the train rolled away, the reporter reminded Elvis that they had met five years earlier at a tiny radio station. Amazingly, Elvis remembered him perfectly.
This rare look at a young Elvis shows why millions of people still love him today. He wasn’t just a king on a stage; he was a gracious gentleman who treated everyone with respect.
