After years of movie-making, Elvis threw himself back into live performing. Las Vegas residencies and long tours kept him away for weeks at a time. The couple separated in early 1972. Just weeks later, Elvis walked into a recording studio and cut “Separate Ways” and “Always on My Mind.” Fans have been reading between those lines ever since.
Even the legal process was surprisingly gentle. The official divorce transcript shows Elvis confirming that the two had been discussing arrangements over a period of months.
