The Midnight Race Between Elvis and Steve McQueen Makes a Great Story. Did It Happen?

It’s a great scene. Warm night up in the Hollywood Hills, the city quiet down below, two of the most famous men alive racing motorcycles in the dark. The story goes that Elvis and Steve McQueen met up for a private race, bet on their custom bikes, and tore through the canyons with nobody watching. People have told it for years because it sounds like exactly the kind of thing that should have happened.

Trouble is, there’s no real record that it did.

Go looking for a source and nothing holds up. No reliable account documents any motorcycle race between Elvis and McQueen, not in 1963, not any year. No solid sign of a bet, a date, or even a friendship between the two of them. They ran in different circles. Elvis stuck close to his own crew, the group people called the Memphis Mafia, and there’s little to suggest he and McQueen spent much time together at all. The midnight race reads like folklore, the kind of story that latches onto famous people because it suits them.

Makes sense that McQueen got cast as the rival, mind you. He actually rode, seriously and well, and he raced in international events. If somebody were going to make up a midnight race for Elvis, McQueen’s the obvious guy to put on the other bike.

Elvis did love motorcycles, and that part’s documented. He bought a bunch of Triumphs and handed them out to the guys in his circle, same as he did with cars, so they could all ride together. Some of those bikes are still sitting at Graceland, and the archivist told the real stories behind them.

The real picture is Elvis leading his buddies through Memphis on matching bikes he’d paid for, which honestly tells you more about him than any secret duel would. So enjoy the race as a story, just don’t go filing it under fact. It sticks around because it catches something people sense about both men, that under all the fame they were restless types who liked speed and wanted a few minutes that belonged to nobody but them.

The Triumph thing ran deep enough that the company built a 2024 Elvis edition around it, decades on.
