Elvis Presley surrounded himself with close friends and employees who became known as the Memphis Mafia, but according to people inside that circle, there was one boundary nobody was supposed to cross. When it came to Priscilla, Elvis reportedly made it clear that another man should never be alone with her, even if nothing romantic was happening.
Red West later claimed Elvis was intensely protective and possessive of Priscilla. He said she was not supposed to enter a room with other men unless Elvis was already there. Priscilla herself later wrote that although she became friendly with members of Elvis’s entourage, Elvis never wanted her becoming too close or familiar with them.
Jerry Schilling Talks About Elvis and Priscilla
Jerry Schilling discovered how serious that rule could become. Schilling was one of Elvis’s closest friends and had known him since childhood. One evening, he reportedly went into the kitchen to make himself something to eat. Priscilla walked in and the two began having an innocent conversation. Then Elvis appeared.
According to accounts from both Red West and Schilling, Elvis became furious when he found them alone together. West recalled Elvis demanding to know what they were doing, while Schilling later remembered the encounter as the moment Elvis made the boundary unmistakably clear: no man in the house was to be alone with Priscilla. Schilling was reportedly warned that ignoring it again could threaten his job.
What makes the story especially striking is how close Schilling was to Elvis. He joined the Memphis Mafia in 1964 and remained one of Elvis’s trusted friends for the next 13 years. Elvis trusted him during death threats, had him drive Elvis and Priscilla to the hospital when Lisa Marie was born and even took him along on the famous trip that ended with Elvis meeting President Richard Nixon.
Elvis Presley became the King of Rock and Roll through “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” Jailhouse Rock and a career that changed popular music. But life inside his private circle could operate by rules that fans never saw. Even one of his closest friends apparently learned that when it came to Priscilla, Elvis considered one particular boundary completely non-negotiable. Watch Jerry Schilling discuss the complicated trust that existed between the three of them.
