Elvis Presley’s gold lamé suit looked like the perfect uniform for rock and roll’s new king. Commissioned by Colonel Tom Parker and created by Nudie Cohn in 1957, the dazzling outfit included a jacket, trousers, belt, shoes and string tie. Yet beneath the glamour was a surprising truth: Elvis wore the complete suit onstage only three times before quietly abandoning most of it.
The outfit was publicly promoted as the famous $10,000 gold suit, though its actual cost was reportedly $2,500. Elvis first revealed it before 12,000 fans at Chicago’s International Amphitheatre on March 28, 1957. The crowd saw a glittering star descend towards the stage, but the clothing soon created problems his audience could not see.

After Chicago, Elvis wore the ensemble in St. Louis then again during his first Toronto show on April 2. By his second Toronto performance, the gold trousers and tie were gone. He kept the jacket, belt and shoes but paired them with black clothing that allowed him to look dramatic without sacrificing his movement.
Several explanations followed. The lamé fabric reportedly creased, flaked at the knees and became hot and restrictive when Elvis moved. Peter Guralnick wrote that Elvis disliked the outfit’s clownish appearance, while others recalled that he felt uncomfortable. Whatever the reason, the golden image lasted far longer than the complete suit.

Elvis last wore the jacket at his 1961 USS Arizona Memorial benefit in Honolulu. By then, the outfit had already become immortal through the 1959 album cover 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong. Years later, it returned from Colonel Parker’s storage and became a treasured Graceland display, preserving a costume Elvis himself never loved.
