Sam Thompson first met Elvis in November 1972. At the time Elvis was dating Sam’s sister Linda Thompson. As an officer with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Elvis and Sam became fast friends.

In July 1973 Elvis purchased a home for Sam less than a mile from the gates of Graceland. Sam travelled with Elvis on the road tours from 1972 until 1976 as Elvis’ friend and companion.

In July 1976 Sam went to work full time for Elvis as his personal bodyguard and tour advance man providing security for Elvis at Graceland, his other homes in California and on all the road tours including hotel and airport security. Sam was present at the recording sessions of eight albums and accompanied Elvis on 10 separate road tours comprising approximately 130 separate concert and stage performances.

Sam returned to his position with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department on September 1 1977. He later graduated Law School at the University of Memphis in 1984.

One memorable incident involved Jerry Lee Lewis arriving at Graceland armed and under the influence. Sam had to intervene, pulling Jerry Lee from his car after it damaged the gate. The situation de-escalated peacefully and highlighted the complex bonds in Elvis’ world. Elvis loved Jerry Lee and often pondered why fate had chosen him as The King over equally talented peers.

Sam’s deep friendship with Elvis endured even after Elvis and Linda Thompson parted ways in 1976. Elvis personally asked Sam to stay on emphasizing trust amid betrayals from others. Sam witnessed the intense pressures of fame firsthand. Fans would claw at Elvis leaving marks that required bandages after shows. Threats were rarely malicious but stemmed from overwhelming adoration. Sam also worried about Elvis’ prescription drug use confronting him directly only to be briefly fired before being quietly reinstated. As his karate instructor Ed Parker noted you cannot protect a man from himself.

On the day Elvis died Sam was at Graceland securing the scene and caring for young Lisa Marie Presley. He helped deliver the heartbreaking news to his sister Linda over the phone. Sam later reflected on Lisa’s resilience growing up under immense scrutiny.
