Elvis Presley could sing almost anything. Give him a fast rock song, a slow country tune, or a church hymn, and he could learn it in two minutes. He would walk up to the microphone, look at his band, and make magic happen on the first try. But in December 1973, inside a famous music studio called Stax in Memphis, one simple song broke his heart so badly that he had to stop.
Elvis was going through a really sad time in his life. Just two months earlier, his divorce from his wife, Priscilla, became official. Even though they still cared about each other and loved their daughter, Lisa Marie, their marriage was over. Elvis was hurting, but he still had to go to work and record brand-new music for his record company.
During those music sessions, the musician Norbert Putnam brought Elvis a sad song called “We Had It All.” The words were about a person looking back at an old love. The song says that even though the relationship is over forever, nobody can take away the happy times they shared. It was not an angry song. It was just a quiet confession about missing someone special.
When the music started, Elvis tried to sing. He tried four, five, maybe six times, but he could not get through the words. The song sounded too much like his own life. He was not thinking about the paper with the lyrics anymore—he was thinking about Priscilla, his home at Graceland, and his little girl. Elvis started to cry right there in front of his band.
Elvis finally dropped his microphone onto the floor. He looked at his amazed friends and said, “You can put that one out after I’ve been dead 20 years.” He was angry, embarrassed, and deeply sad. The band tried to record the song again the next day, but it was no use. Elvis could not sing it without breaking down.
The most mysterious part of the story is that no tape of this moment exists today. Nobody knows if the recording machine was turned off or if the tape was thrown away. Fans will never get to hear Elvis try to sing “We Had It All.”
Elvis went on to record plenty of other great hits, but this one unfinished song tells us who he really was. Behind the fancy jumpsuits, the giant crowds, and the famous smile, Elvis Presley was just a real person who missed his family. He could sing about heartbreak for millions of fans, but this was the one song that hurt too much to finish.
