Elvis Presley did not just dominate record stores in the 1950s and 1960s. Hollywood turned him into one of its biggest stars too. Between Love Me Tender in 1956 and Change of Habit in 1969, Elvis appeared in 31 feature films as an actor. He later appeared in two theatrically released concert documentaries, bringing his theatrical film total even higher.
His earliest movies suggested Elvis might develop into a serious actor. Jailhouse Rock and King Creole remain among his most critically respected films, and Elvis himself was particularly proud of King Creole.

After Elvis returned from the Army, however, Hollywood discovered a safer formula: attractive locations, romance, comedy and plenty of songs.
Movies such as G.I. Blues, Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls! and Viva Las Vegas were designed as light musical entertainment. The strategy worked commercially. Graceland says Elvis became one of Hollywood’s top box-office draws, while Blue Hawaii produced a soundtrack that spent 20 weeks at No. 1. Viva Las Vegas later became the highest-grossing movie of his career.

But success came with a cost.
As the decade continued, the plots became increasingly repetitive and many soundtrack songs were chosen to fit movie situations rather than push Elvis forward musically. By the late 1960s, even Graceland’s official history describes Elvis as deeply frustrated with the limitations Hollywood had placed on his creativity. He had wanted opportunities to prove himself as a serious actor, but those opportunities rarely came.
That frustration helps explain why the 1968 Comeback Special mattered so much. After years of movie sets and soundtrack sessions, Elvis was finally back in front of a live audience, singing music that felt like his again.
Hollywood had made Elvis richer, more famous and enormously successful at the box office.
But by the end of the 1960s, getting away from the movie formula was exactly what helped bring the real Elvis Presley back.
