Elvis Presley was already one of the most famous entertainers on earth, but away from the stage he had another fascination: police work. By the mid-1970s, collecting badges and befriending officers was apparently no longer enough. According to former bodyguard Dave Hebler, Elvis once prepared to ride with a Memphis narcotics officer on an actual drug bust.
His choice of disguise was almost impossible to believe. Hebler recalled Elvis putting on a jumpsuit, then a bulky snowsuit, a ski mask and a hat. He added a cigar and carried a small revolver. Instead of helping him blend in, Hebler thought the outfit made Elvis stand out even more as they climbed into the narcotics officer’s car.
Elvis Presley: The King of Rock & Roll… and Traffic Stops
The strange idea was not completely out of character. Elvis had a long fascination with law enforcement and sometimes became involved when he encountered police situations around Memphis. That makes the story of him dressing for a drug raid feel less like a random joke and more like an extreme version of something he genuinely enjoyed.
But there was one problem that night. By the time Elvis and Hebler went with the officer, the drug bust had already happened. They ended up at the police station instead, where Elvis remained inside the heavy disguise. Hebler remembered him sweating in the outfit while looking over the suspects.
Elvis Presley’s Quest for a Narcotics Badge
And this is where Elvis’s interest in police work becomes even more fascinating. Years earlier, he had gone all the way to Washington while pursuing a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. President Richard Nixon eventually agreed that Elvis could receive the badge, although Elvis was not appointed as an honorary federal agent.
For all these unusual stories, Elvis Presley was still, above everything else, an entertainer who helped transform popular music and became one of the defining performers of the 20th century. The badges, disguises and police adventures reveal a completely different side of the man behind the music. Watch both videos above and see just how far Elvis’s fascination with law enforcement really went.
