Elvis Presley was famous for suddenly giving friends cars, jewelry and expensive gifts. But in 1974, he did something for longtime friend Jerry Schilling that carried a completely different meaning. Elvis bought him a house in the hills of West Hollywood. When Jerry realized what was happening, he later recalled that his hands began shaking so badly he dropped the check.
This was not simply Elvis showing off his wealth. Jerry’s mother had died when he was only one year old. He spent much of his childhood moving between his grandparents, aunts and uncles in a poor Memphis neighborhood. Jerry later admitted that growing up without a stable home had left him feeling lonely and out of place.

Jerry had never even told Elvis much about those childhood feelings. Yet Elvis somehow understood what having a home would mean to him. When he gave Jerry the house, Elvis explained why: “You never had a home, and I want to be the one to give it to you.”
The gift also marked a turning point in Jerry’s life. He had lived with Elvis at Graceland for roughly a decade after joining his inner circle in 1964. Jerry remembered Graceland as the safest and warmest home he had ever known. Then Elvis gave him a place that could finally belong to him.
More than 50 years later, the story has an incredible ending. In 2025, Jerry was still living in the same California house Elvis bought him in 1974. Standing on its balcony, he remembered Elvis explaining why the gift mattered and said he believed he may have been the only person outside Elvis’s immediate family for whom Elvis bought a home.
Elvis Presley changed music with “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog” and performances that made him the King of Rock and Roll. He gave away plenty of expensive things during his life, but this gift was different. Elvis knew what his friend had missed as a child and decided that, after all those years, Jerry should finally have somewhere he could call home.
