In March 1976, drivers involved in a Memphis traffic accident received help from possibly the last person they expected to see. Elvis Presley happened to come across the crash, pulled over and walked toward the people involved instead of simply continuing home. He checked whether anyone needed help and stayed at the scene as the situation was brought under control.
Then the scene became even stranger. Graceland’s account says Elvis began helping police direct traffic around the accident. Everything apparently went smoothly until passing drivers and people nearby started realizing that the man standing in the road was not another officer. It was the King of Rock and Roll.
Elvis Presley Got a Police Badge From President Nixon
The accident happened only weeks after Elvis had been named an honorary captain by the Memphis Police Department in February 1976. His fascination with police work stretched back much further. Memphis patrolman Jim Hammers remembered Elvis regularly stopping to talk with officers while Graceland says he visited police stations, collected badges and donated money and equipment to law enforcement organizations.
Priscilla Presley later remembered that Elvis even kept a blue police light for his car. According to her account, he sometimes used it to pull over speeding motorists, flash one of his badges and warn them to slow down. She said Elvis genuinely liked seeing himself as a protector of the public, sometimes even stopping when he saw fights or trouble unfolding.
His obsession with badges had already produced one of the strangest White House meetings in history. In December 1970, Elvis unexpectedly met President Richard Nixon and asked for a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Official White House records show Elvis arrived carrying several law enforcement badges he already owned. Nixon eventually agreed to help him obtain the federal badge he desperately wanted.
That makes the Memphis accident feel less like a random celebrity stunt. Elvis Presley had spent years fascinated by police work and surrounded himself with badges, scanners and officers he considered friends. So when he came across a real crash in 1976, he apparently did what came naturally to him: pulled over, checked on the people involved and helped direct the cars until the scene settled down.
Elvis changed popular music with “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock” and performances that made him one of the most famous entertainers alive. But for a few bizarre minutes on a Memphis road, the King apparently forgot about being a superstar and became the traffic cop he always seemed to want to be.
