Graceland was Elvis Presley’s world. It’s the Memphis mansion he bought back in 1957, and for twenty years it was the one place he could just be himself, away from the screaming crowds and the cameras.
He kept his own hours there too. Elvis mostly slept through the day and came alive at night, so the family would catch him in the afternoon or evening when he finally came downstairs.
You’d think a man in his own house, with nobody left to impress, would pad around loose and comfortable. Robe, comfy clothes, the way the rest of us slump around on a slow day.
Not Elvis.
The two women who knew him best inside that house, his wife Priscilla and his daughter Lisa Marie, told the same little story years apart. And they landed on the exact same detail.
Priscilla Presley married Elvis in 1967 and lived at Graceland with him. When she sat down with Vogue in 2022 to walk through the outfits that shaped her life, she got to talking about how put-together Elvis always was. Even at home. Even when it was just the two of them.
She goes look by look through her whole life with Elvis, and somewhere in it she lets slip what he was really like coming down those famous stairs.
Priscilla Presley walks through a lifetime of looks and remembers Elvis on the staircase
Here’s what she said. “Even at Graceland, he would be dressed up coming down the staircase. No pajamas.”
No pajamas. Not once.
Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’s only child, grew up running around that same house as a little girl. In 2012 she stood inside Graceland to open an exhibit of her dad’s belongings, and a reporter asked her what he was actually like at home. She remembered it word for word the way her mother did.
“He was always fully, fully geared up,” Lisa Marie said. “You’d never see him in his pajamas coming down the steps, ever.”
Then she put it even better. “You’d never see him in anything but ‘ready to be seen’ attire.”
This was his own home, in the middle of the afternoon, with only family around. And he still came down that grand staircase dressed and ready, like someone might knock at the door any minute.
Nobody’s totally sure why. Could’ve been pride. Could’ve been that after all those years on a stage, he just never learned how to switch it off. Priscilla has her own read on it, and hearing her tell it, one look at a time, says more than any guess of ours would.
The clip up above is her Vogue sit-down. She’s warm and funny about the whole thing, and the “No pajamas” line comes straight from her. Go give it a watch.
