Tucked behind Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion, just past the pool, there is a small garden that means more to his fans than almost any stage he ever played. It is called the Meditation Garden, and it is the most peaceful corner of the whole estate.
Walk into it and the first thing you notice is a beautiful white marble statue of Jesus, arms stretched wide, with two angels kneeling at the base. It is calm and gentle, and there is a tender story behind why it is there at all.
Elvis did not have the statue made for himself. He commissioned it for his mother, Gladys. The two of them were extraordinarily close, and when she died in 1958 it devastated him. Friends said he was never quite the same again afterward. The statue was his way of honoring the woman he loved most in the world, and it first stood at her grave across town.
Today, Elvis rests in that same Meditation Garden, right beside his mother, with the statue watching over them both. Every morning, before the mansion opens to visitors, the gates are opened and fans are welcomed up the driveway free of charge, just to stand quietly at his grave and pay their respects.
Here is a part of the story that surprises almost everyone, though. Elvis was not originally buried at Graceland at all. Something happened in the weeks after his death that forced his family to move him here, and the reason is stranger and more unsettling than most people would ever guess.

For a man who spent his whole life surrounded by noise and crowds, the Meditation Garden is the opposite of everything he was known for. It is still and simple, and it has become sacred ground for the millions of people who loved him.
Once a year, that quiet garden fills with light. During Elvis Week every August, thousands of fans line up holding candles and walk slowly up to his grave through the night. The flames stretch all the way down the driveway, and many who have been say it is one of the most moving things they have ever seen.

In the end, the Meditation Garden comes down to something very simple. A son’s love for his mother, and a quiet place where the legend finally gets to rest. Press play and visit the most peaceful corner of Graceland.
