Fresh off a show in Texas, 21-year-old Elvis and his band boarded a middle-of-the-night flight to Nashville, Tennessee. The pilot lost his way, missed a planned fuel stop, and was forced to make a scary, sudden landing in Arkansas. Shaken and exhausted, the group finally made it to the music studio at nine in the morning, ready to create rock and roll history.
Elvis was used to staying up late, not singing soft love songs early in the morning. Studio photos from that day show a sleepy young man with his shoes kicked off, trying his absolute best to sound romantic. Because everyone was so tired, recording “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” turned into a total mess. Elvis sang the song 17 times, but not a single try was perfect. In the end, the record producer had to take the best parts of two different takes and tape them together in the middle to build one complete, seamless song.
