One night in February 1976, Elvis got a craving. Not for anything you could pick up down the road. For a very specific sandwich, from a very specific restaurant, nearly a thousand miles away in Denver, Colorado.
So the Lisa Marie, Elvis’s private jet, was fueled up and sent west through the dark. It landed in Denver at around twenty to two in the morning. The group ate right there in an airport hangar, then turned around and flew home. A private jet scrambled across half the country in the middle of the night, all for something to eat.
And what exactly was worth all that trouble?
The legendary Elvis sandwich, still made today
It was called the Fool’s Gold Loaf. And it is not a modest thing. You take a whole loaf of bread, hollow it out and fill it with a whole jar of peanut butter, a whole jar of jelly and a full pound of bacon.

Two of Elvis’s police officer friends from Denver had raved about it, and that was all it took. The craving won. The jet flew.
Plenty of people have sent out for a late-night snack before. Only Elvis ever sent a private jet a thousand miles to go and fetch one.
