Every big story has a small beginning. For Elvis Presley, one of the biggest begins inside a hardware store in Tupelo, Mississippi, back in January 1946.
He was turning 11 that month. His birthday fell on January 8. And his mother, Gladys, took him down to the Tupelo Hardware Company on West Main Street to pick out a present.
Now, a hardware store is a funny place to find the start of a music legend. They sold tools and seeds and nails, not the kind of thing you’d expect to change the world. But that day they also had a few guitars in stock. And young Elvis had his heart set on something else entirely.
Here’s the store, and the story of that day, told by the people who kept it going.
Inside the store where it all started
That’s a visitor’s look around the shop in its final days, with the tale of the boy and the guitar passed down just the way the locals always told it.
So what did Elvis really want? Not the guitar. He had his eye on a .22 rifle.
Gladys had other ideas. She wasn’t keen on that choice at all, and she gently pointed her son toward the row of guitars instead.
The clerk who helped them was a man named Forrest L. Bobo. Years later, in 1979, he still remembered the moment clear as day. He pulled a guitar down off the shelf and handed it over so Elvis could get a feel for it. And Gladys, by his account, leaned in with a simple question. “Son, wouldn’t you rather have the guitar?”
Elvis picked it up. He strummed it. He turned it over in his hands and sat with it for a good while. Something must have clicked, because that first wish was forgotten and he chose the guitar. His mother covered the rest of what it cost, and the two of them walked out with the instrument that would carry him out of Tupelo and into history.
It’s hard not to wonder how the whole thing might have gone if Gladys had just said yes to his first request.
One more chapter closed recently. After almost a hundred years in business, the old Tupelo Hardware Company shut its downtown doors at the end of 2025. The building meant far too much to lose, though. In December 2025 the City of Tupelo stepped up and agreed to buy it, so the place where Elvis got his first guitar will be looked after for the fans who still make the trip.
Here’s a warm reminder of just how much that little store means to the Elvis story.
The day Elvis’s first guitar came home to Tupelo
Watch that and you’ll see why people travel from all over to stand where a shy 11-year-old once chose a guitar over the thing he thought he wanted.
