Most celebrities would never discuss their divorce in the middle of a concert.
Elvis Presley did.
On September 2, 1974, during his closing-night show at the Las Vegas Hilton, Elvis suddenly introduced someone sitting in the audience:
his ex-wife Priscilla.
Their divorce had been finalized less than a year earlier, on October 9, 1973.
But instead of sounding bitter, Elvis told thousands of people that he and Priscilla were still “the very best of friends.”
Then he publicly explained why he believed their marriage had failed.
Elvis said it was not because of another man or another woman.
Instead, he blamed the circumstances surrounding his career.
He was constantly touring.
Constantly traveling.
And, in his words, simply “gone too much.”

The remarkable moment survives on audio from the concert.
Elvis told the audience that he eventually felt the arrangement was unfair to Priscilla because he spent so much time away.
So they separated.
But he said they also made an agreement to remain close and continue caring about each other because they had a daughter to raise.
That daughter was sitting there too.
Elvis introduced six-year-old Lisa Marie, even jokingly telling her to pull her dress down as she excitedly jumped up in the booth.
The scene became even more unusual when Elvis introduced his girlfriend at the time, Sheila Ryan, who was reportedly sitting in the same area.
Yet Elvis kept returning to the relationship he still shared with Priscilla.
He joked about their divorce settlement and described the expensive gifts they continued giving one another.
Elvis said he had bought Priscilla a mink coat and a Jaguar after the settlement.
Then he proudly revealed that Priscilla had given him a $42,000 white Rolls-Royce, describing it as a gesture of love.
Priscilla later described their post-divorce relationship in similar terms.
In later interviews, she said the two remained exceptionally close and continued working together as parents to give Lisa Marie stability despite no longer being married.
That makes Elvis’s onstage explanation especially revealing.
This was not an interview carefully arranged by a publicist.
It was Elvis standing in front of a Las Vegas audience, looking toward his former wife and daughter and openly admitting that his extraordinary career had come with a personal cost.
The same touring schedule that made Elvis Presley one of the biggest entertainers in the world was, according to Elvis himself, also one of the reasons his marriage could no longer work.
