Elvis loved to keep his band on their toes. Literally.
The man in charge of that band was Joe Guercio, who conducted Elvis’s orchestra in Las Vegas and out on tour through most of the 1970s. It was a big job, and Elvis didn’t make it easy. In the best way.
See, Elvis loved to be spontaneous up there. He’d get a feeling, spin around, and just launch into a song nobody had cued up. “He’d just turn around and start a tune,” Guercio remembered, and the whole orchestra had to scramble to catch him.
Elvis having fun with his orchestra on stage
Here’s live audio of Elvis joking around and introducing Guercio’s orchestra during a Vegas show.
So one day Guercio came up with a line to describe what his job was really like. He said conducting for Elvis was “like following a marble down concrete steps.” You can picture it. A marble bouncing every which way, impossible to predict, and you just trying to keep up.
It was a good joke. Maybe too good, because word of it got back to Elvis.
And Elvis, being Elvis, decided the joke deserved a response. Not an angry one. A playful one, the kind only he would think of.
The next time Guercio walked into his dressing room, something was waiting for him. Reportedly it took him a second to even understand what he was looking at, because it was everywhere.
Elvis on the mic in Las Vegas
Here he is again introducing the orchestra, giving you a feel for those nights.
What Elvis left him tied right back to that marble joke, in a way that was equal parts clever and hilarious. There was his stage tuxedo, there was the whole room, and there was a short note signed simply “E.P.”
The note was only a few words. But put together with what filled the room, it was Elvis’s perfect comeback to a man who said he was impossible to follow.
It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes prank that shows you who Elvis was off stage. Funny. Quick. Always listening, even to a joke made at his own expense, and always ready with something better.
Click the clips above and you’ll hear the easy, playful side of those Vegas nights, the same spirit that led to the gag in the dressing room. For the full punchline, it’s a story worth knowing.
