Imagine opening a bathroom door and seeing a chimpanzee in a suit screaming at you. That wasn’t a weird dream—it was just another random day at Graceland.
Elvis Presley owned plenty of animals, but none caused as much chaos as Scatter, his famous pet chimp. Before moving in with the King of Rock and Roll, Scatter was actually a TV star on a local Memphis kids’ show. But once Elvis brought him home, Scatter basically took over the house and turned the whole estate into his personal playground.
Scatter was smart, surprisingly strong, and hated staying in his cage. Whenever anyone let him loose, trouble started almost immediately. He loved hiding behind doors to jump out at guests, pulling down expensive curtains, and tearing up the rooms. Elvis found the whole thing hilarious. When he threw big parties at Graceland, he would secretly tell his buddies to let the chimp loose. Scatter would run into the living room screeching and waving his arms, sending terrified guests diving onto the couches to get away.

The pranks didn’t stay inside the house, either. One of Elvis’s friends, Alan Fortas, used to dress Scatter up in a suit and a little driver’s hat. He’d put the chimp on his lap while driving Elvis’s Rolls-Royce. Whenever they passed another car, Alan would duck out of sight under the dashboard so it looked like a chimpanzee was behind the wheel. Surprised drivers couldn’t believe what they were seeing, and one guy even accidentally drove his car straight off the road!
As Scatter got older and stronger, taking him along on movie sets across the country got way too difficult. At a motel in Arizona, he trashed his room and leaped onto a maid’s back the second she opened the door.
In California, he escaped, ran into a neighbor’s cocktail party, and had everyone climbing onto tables in terror. After that, Scatter was officially banned from Hollywood and sent back to Memphis. Yet, no matter how wild he acted with everyone else, he always listened to Elvis. If Scatter went too far, Elvis would stare him down, call him a “coconut head,” and the chimp would walk back to his room like a kid who knew he was grounded.
Scatter was easily the biggest troublemaker on the property, but he still stands out as the most legendary pet in rock history.
