Ella Langley practically grew up at her grandparents’ house. Then they asked her parents for something nobody saw coming.

Ella Langley is one of the hottest names in country music right now.

She’s from Hope Hull, Alabama, and she was born May 3, 1999. Her song “Choosin’ Texas” went all the way to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, the big chart that counts every kind of music, not only country. And at the 2026 ACM Awards, she was named Female Artist of the Year.

But ask Ella where her music came from, and she doesn’t start with Nashville. She starts with two older folks in Alabama.

These were her grandparents on her dad’s side. They’d been through plenty of life by the time Ella came along. “My grandma had my dad when she was 45,” Ella explained. “So they were older when I was born, and I was the first girl in our family for the longest time.”

That last part mattered a lot to her grandma.

“She had all sons, so when I was born, she’s like, ‘Yes!'”

Ella told the story while talking with fellow country singer Tracy Lawrence on his show, “TL’s Road House.” And she wasn’t an occasional visitor. “I lived at their house pretty much,” she said.

And that house was full of music. Ella says music was “all they had” growing up. “My grandpa could play any instrument by ear,” she said. She first learned to sing at church, sitting right beside her grandfather while he played the piano.

Her grandparents were so proud of her voice that they’d show it off to anybody who came by. When the mail lady stopped at the house, they’d ask if she wanted to hear Ella sing.

So what did these two do with all that love?

They went to Ella’s mom and dad and asked to adopt her.

“I mean, they literally asked to adopt me,” Ella said.

Their pitch was simple, and pretty funny once you hear it. As Ella tells it, they said, “You have the other siblings, we’ll just take this one.”

Her parents kept her, of course. Ella still spent much of her childhood at her grandparents’ house, soaking up every song she heard there.

Here’s Ella’s full sit-down with Tracy Lawrence, where she talks about growing up in her musically inclined family. It’s the whole episode, so pour a cup of coffee and settle in.

Her grandparents have since passed away, but Ella hasn’t let them go far. She’s honored them in her songs. On “Loving Life Again,” she slipped in a nod to a childhood game she used to play with her grandma.

These days Ella sings under arena lights. Her voice got its start somewhere a lot smaller, though, on a church pew next to her grandpa and in an Alabama house where two proud grandparents once asked to keep her.
