Nearly fifty years after Elvis Presley died, his family is still arguing with the accepted version of his last years — and the loudest voice belongs to somebody who was actually in the house.
Donna Presley is Elvis’s first cousin, the daughter of Vernon’s sister Nashval. She is 85, spent summers at Graceland from the age of ten, and eventually lived on the property when her father went to work for Elvis.
In September 2025, after Priscilla Presley published her memoir, Donna released a video on her own YouTube channel and went at it line by line.
Her sharpest objection was to the description of Elvis as a person with an addiction.

“I reject her claim that Elvis had drug addiction issues,” she said. “For Priscilla to make that accusation, it is not only false, it is disgusting.”
Her argument is about proximity. “The public should remember that from 1973 until Elvis died in 1977, Priscilla was not living at Graceland. She cannot speak with authority about those final years.” And: “Elvis was not an addict. He would not be able to maintain his life.” She pointed out that he was surrounded daily by his father, his grandmother, and the wider family inside that home.

Now the documented side, because it deserves stating plainly.
By his final tour in 1977, Elvis was visibly unwell. Photographs show him heavy and exhausted. He could no longer move around a stage the way he had, and often leaned on the microphone stand. He was in real, chronic pain and had been for years — and he refused to cancel shows because he would not let an audience down.
On 16 August 1977, he was found unresponsive at Graceland and pronounced dead at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was 42. His heart was found to be badly enlarged, damaged by years of high blood pressure and strain.
Both things can be true. A family who insist the man they lived with was not who the headlines describe — and a body that had simply been pushed past what it could take.
