Imagine working with the most famous movie star in the world, only to discover he treats you like his own younger sister. That is exactly what happened to actress Cynthia Pepper when she worked with Elvis Presley on the 1964 movie Kissin’ Cousins.
While many people expected a big Hollywood romance, their true story was actually built on kindness, respect, and mutual trust.
When Cynthia first arrived in her dressing room on her very first day, she found a lovely bunch of roses with a card signed, “Love from E.P.” At first, she thought Elvis might have a crush on her! But she quickly learned that Elvis was simply a polite Southern gentleman who wanted to make all his leading ladies feel welcome.
She recently shared that Elvis constantly looked out for her on the set. If other actors made rude jokes, Elvis stepped in to protect her and told them to respect “the little lady.” He even gave her the playful nickname “little speckled pup.”

Their movie had plenty of funny scenes where Cynthia’s character had to beat Elvis up! In one funny scene, Cynthia had to flip Elvis over her shoulder. Elvis personally helped teach her the karate moves so she could throw him down safely without hurting him. Another time, Cynthia had to drive a heavy military jeep right toward Elvis and stop just in time. She was terrified of making a mistake, joking later that she almost became famous as the girl who accidentally ran over the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll!
Working together also meant spending time together! One day, while waiting out a rainstorm near a jeep, Elvis looked at Cynthia and made a surprising confession: “I should be driving a truck.” Cynthia shared that even though he was famous and rich, part of him still felt like the young, simple man who used to drive a delivery truck in Memphis.
Spending time with him made her realize that beneath the big star power, Elvis was a real person with deep feelings and insecurities.
Although Cynthia and Elvis did not stay close after the movie ended, those fast weeks of filming left a giant mark on her heart. Elvis gave her her very first on-screen kiss, taught her how to perform action scenes, and showed her how caring a big superstar could be.
