Carrie Underwood and her husband sang the same love song to their baby. Only one of them got a happy audience.

Every parent knows a baby can be the toughest crowd in the house. Carrie Underwood found that out the funny way, and she was brave enough to share it with the whole world.

Carrie is one of the biggest voices in country music. Her husband, Mike Fisher, is a retired NHL hockey player who spent his career with the Ottawa Senators and the Nashville Predators. The two have been married since July 2010.

In the summer of 2019 they had a brand new baby boy at home. Jacob Bryan Fisher, who goes by Jake, was born on Jan. 21, 2019. That made him just 5 months old when this happened. He’s 7 now.

The song they picked was a good one. “I Still Believe in You” is a 1992 hit love song by Vince Gill, the Country Music Hall of Fame singer and guitarist. It’s soft and sweet. You’d think it would work on any baby.

So Mike went first.

On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Carrie posted a home video on Instagram that shows the two of them taking turns with the very same song. Keep your eyes on Jacob, because his opinion changes the second the singer does.

Carrie and Mike take turns singing to baby Jacob

Here’s how the “sing-off” went. Mike leaned over his son and sang Vince Gill’s love song, and Jacob burst into loud tears. Then Carrie took over and sang the same song. He stopped crying right away and looked up at her, calm and content.

They kept trading turns. And the pattern never changed once. Dad sang, and the tears came back. Mom sang, and the baby settled.

Carrie gave the clip a short caption: “Everyone’s a critic…” She added a shrug emoji and tagged both Mike and Vince Gill.

Mike was a good sport about the whole thing. He hopped into the comments with his own explanation, and it’s a pretty good one: “The real reason is he was hungry and wanted your food. #notmysinging”

Plenty of dads would say the same.

The clip got plenty of attention, and even other stars couldn’t resist it. Pop singer Justin Timberlake called it “the greatest thing I’ve seen all year.”

If you only caught it once, it’s worth a second look. This version of the clip lets you see the back-and-forth again, and Jacob’s quick change from tears to calm is just as funny the second time around.

Baby Jacob reacts to Dad, then to Mom

What makes it so sweet is that it’s all in fun. Carrie shared it with a shrug, and Mike laughed right along with her.

Any mom or dad who has handed a fussy baby back to the other parent will know the feeling. It just doesn’t usually end up in the news.

Mike may not have won over his toughest critic that day. He did get the last word in the comments, though.
