How Buddy Holly’s Legend Saved a 90s Rock Band

In 1995, millions of people opened a computer box and found a free CD by Weezer waiting inside. This was not a glitch. It was a digital revolution. Weezer took a gamble by stepping back into the 1950s. They used old sets and clever cameras.

The band stands on the stage at Arnold’s Drive-In from the show Happy Days. The music is loud and happy. It is a song about standing up for the people you love. The famous Fonzie doing his famous dance right next to the drums. It is fun to see how they pulled off this magic trick in the Buddy Holly music video.

Fans still talk about this today. One viewer said they remember listening to this and it feels timeless. Another person joked that they cannot believe Buddy Holly’s parents named him after a Weezer song.

While the music video looks like a party, the story behind it was a total battle. The band almost left this song off their album entirely. It took a lot of convincing to make this dream happen. This next look behind the curtain shows the struggle to get those famous TV stars to agree to the shoot.

Weezer – The Making of ‘Buddy Holly’ (Vevo Footnotes)

Making this masterpiece was not easy. Spike Jonze had to rebuild the entire diner set to match the old footage. Some actors from the original show did not want to be involved at first. They had to use a body double for the Fonz because the real actor was not there.

Buddy Holly was much more than just a name in a song. He was the spark that lit the fire for every rock band that followed. His music changed rock and roll in just a few short years.
