Buddy Holly and a 90s Song You Know by Heart

Imagine waiting forty years to give someone the perfect birthday present. On September 7, 1994, a young band from California did exactly that for a man who was no longer here to see it.

It would have been Buddy Holly’s 58th birthday. A group called Weezer decided to celebrate by releasing a song named after him. They took a big risk because their singer Rivers Cuomo almost threw the track in the trash for being too silly.

You can hear the classic ‘Ooh-wee-hoo’ melody that makes you want to snap your fingers.  This “geek-chic” anthem proved that being yourself is the coolest thing you can ever do.

People who first heard this on their brand-new Windows 95 computers still talk about it today. One fan remembered how they watched the video over and over because it was the only thing on their PC. Another viewer said the song makes them feel young again every single time the beat starts.

The band took that same heart across the ocean to show it off live. They traveled to Germany a few years later to play for a massive crowd under the bright lights.
