Before filming even started, there was trouble. MGM wanted to give Elvis a real prison haircut — sideburns and all. When fans found out, they went to war. Around 4,000 angry letters poured into the studio, begging them not to touch his famous hair. Amazingly, the fans won. Elvis wore a short wig for the prison scenes instead, and his real hair stayed exactly where it belonged.

Then came the scariest moment of all. While practicing a slide down a pole, a cap from Elvis’s tooth came loose — and he breathed it in. It traveled down his throat and got stuck in his lung. Doctors rushed him to the hospital and pulled it out without surgery. Days later, Elvis was back on set, joking that he’d be fine as long as he didn’t swallow the rest of his teeth. That same set gave us the legendary “Jailhouse Rock” dance number, built from Elvis’s own natural stage moves — the leg shakes, the hip swings, the sudden freezes his fans already loved.
But the movie’s happiest days ended in heartbreak. Judy Tyler, the 24-year-old actress who played Peggy, died in a car accident with her husband just after filming wrapped. Elvis was crushed. He said almost nothing had ever hurt him so badly, and he skipped the Memphis premiere because he couldn’t face seeing her on screen. The film became one of the year’s biggest hits, and in 2004 it was added to the National Film Registry as a true piece of American history.
