Working with Michael Jackson came with a warning Akon did not know he needed. Never, ever let your guard down. He found that out the hard way one night in the late 2000s, while the two were making music together in Las Vegas and decided to take a break for a movie.
The plan was simple. Catch a film at the 3D IMAX. Before they went in, Michael mentioned he had to slip off and change, and that a friend of his would be joining them in the theater. Akon took his seat and waited. A few minutes later an elderly man came shuffling down the aisle, long beard, little hat, and settled into the seat right next to him. Akon barely registered it. Just some old guy catching a movie.
Twenty minutes passed. Still no Michael. Akon got impatient, pulled out his phone, and called him to find out where he was. That is when the phone belonging to the old man right beside him started ringing.
Michael could not hold it together. He cracked up on the spot, thrilled that Akon had been sitting elbow to elbow with him the whole time and never had a clue. The disguise was that good. This was a man who had spent his life being recognized from across stadiums, and he had turned invisibility into a party trick.
The best part was still coming. On their way out, riding the escalator down to the lobby, a group of teenagers clocked Akon and swarmed him for photos and autographs. Akon felt the crowd closing in and started to tense up. Michael, still buried under the old-man getup, saw his moment. He dropped the frail voice, filled his lungs, and boomed across the entire lobby in a deep, carrying shout. Who else wants a photo with Akon?
The place erupted. A fresh wave of fans came running, swallowing Akon whole, while the mysterious old man strolled off to the side completely unbothered, shaking with laughter that nobody in that building could trace back to the King of Pop.
It is the kind of story that reframes how you picture him. The public image was all mystery and seriousness. The private Michael, at least the one his collaborators got to know, was a prankster who found nothing funnier than hiding in plain sight and watching the chaos unfold. Akon has told this one for years because it captures the Michael the cameras rarely caught.
He and Michael did eventually finish the music they were working toward. If you want to hear what came out of those sessions, the song is right here.
