Nearly 50 years after Elvis Presley died, fans are still paying extraordinary amounts of money for pieces of the King.
Sometimes literally.
On August 29, 2026, a lock of hair said to have been cut from Elvis’s head sold at Rockhurst Auctions for $8,625.
The strands were attached to a small card connected to Elvis’s longtime personal barber, Homer “Gill” Gilleland, who reportedly saved clippings after cutting Elvis’s famous hair.
That might sound strange.
But $8,625 is nowhere near the most anyone has paid.
In 2002, a much larger collection of Elvis’s hair sold online for an astonishing $115,120.
Guinness World Records recognizes the sale as the record for the most expensive hair sold at an online auction. The dark clippings measured roughly three inches across and were supported by several letters documenting their history.
The hair had reportedly been collected by Gilleland, who traveled with Elvis and cut his hair for years.
Rather than throwing the clippings away, he preserved some of them.
Decades later, those leftovers became valuable Elvis memorabilia.
Elvis Presley’s Hair Sells for $72,500
In 2021, another baseball-sized collection attributed to Gilleland sold for $72,500.
The auction house said the hair came with extensive documentation, including records showing occasions when Elvis brought Gilleland on the road to cut his hair.
And that was not an isolated sale.
Heritage Auctions sold another large quantity of Elvis hair for $16,730 in 2010.
Why would anyone spend that much?
Elvis’s hair was part of his image almost as much as his voice and jumpsuits.
His black pompadour and sideburns became copied around the world, even though Elvis was actually naturally blond and dyed his hair darker.
For serious collectors, authenticated hair is also different from owning a record or photograph.
There is only a limited amount of it.
Once properly documented pieces disappear into private collections, another may not appear for years.
That scarcity keeps creating extraordinary auction results.
