Cody Johnson Lost His Tour, Won a CMA… and Gained Something Even Bigger

Cody Johnson was supposed to spend this fall onstage, chasing one of the biggest nights of his career. Instead, he was in a hospital gown with a ruptured eardrum, wondering if his hearing would ever feel “right” again… and walking into a delivery room to meet his newborn son.

One day before the 59th CMA Awards, Cody sat down and talked honestly about all of it—four huge nominations, emergency surgery, and what happens when your whole world suddenly shrinks down to a crib, a couch, and two excited big sisters. He said the Entertainer of the Year race was “tighter than it’s been since the 90s,” and he still called Chris Stapleton one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Winning Male Vocalist was big. But he swears it will not change who he is.

Canceling his 2025 shows tore him up. The ear pain was bad, but the mental side was worse. Everything sounded strange. He felt irritated, restless, and scared of what it might mean for his future onstage. And then came the plot twist he never saw coming: because he was forced off the road, he was actually home to hold his son, watch his daughters “go crazy over him,” and plan a quiet holiday as just Dad.

He is already eyeing February 2026 and a massive return at Stagecoach.

The guy who said “everyone in that category deserves it” ends up hearing his name called for Male Vocalist of the Year for the very first time. The cowboy who grew up singing into a taped-up bunk-bed mic chokes up as he thanks God, shouts out Chris Stapleton, and talks about hard work and grace, even though he is still healing and unable to sing a single note that night.

The same voice that fought through pain and doubt is the one standing beside Carrie Underwood on “I’m Gonna Love You” – a tender, old-school country promise that sounds a lot like the life he is building at home. It is the song that helped put him in those CMA categories, but it also feels like a window into the husband and dad he keeps talking about when the spotlight is gone.
