The Unexpected Voice That Made a Whole Festival Crowd Lose Control

You did not have to know his name, his history, or any TV show to feel what was happening. A shy man in a flat cap walked onto the stage at the Riverside Light Festival and started to sing. Within seconds, families stopped walking. People raised their phones. Strangers stood still and wiped tears from their eyes.

That man was Richard Goodall, a longtime school janitor with a voice no one expected. A single phone video of him singing “Don’t Stop Believin’” went viral.
That clip carried him all the way to America’s Got Talent. He surprised the judges, earned a Golden Buzzer, and went on to win the entire season. The same quiet janitor walked away with a one-million-dollar prize and the hearts of millions of viewers.

Now picture that same voice under the open night sky at the Riverside Light Festival. He is singing “Who’s Crying,” putting everything he has into each note. Families stop moving and turn toward the stage. Children fall silent. Adults stand in the dark, openly crying.

Long before Richard ever stepped onstage, the band that shaped his dreams had already taken a chance on another so-called “ordinary” person. Arnel Pineda, now the lead singer of Journey, once lived on the streets in the Philippines.
Guitarist Neal Schon discovered him after seeing his covers of Journey songs online.

Watching Arnel sing “Don’t Stop Believin’” in front of a roaring crowd in Manila shows how high the standard is for that song. It makes it even more remarkable that a school janitor from Indiana now stands on the same musical ground, holding his own on that very anthem.

Before Arnel, before Richard, there was Steve Perry singing “Faithfully” in its original 1983 form. This is the sound Richard grew up loving, the blueprint he carries into every note. In that song, Perry sings about “circus life” and lonely hotel rooms, a life on the road Richard had never known while mopping school floors for 23 years.
