For almost 50 years, one of rock and roll’s most famous pictures had a secret. Imagine, 1956, and Elvis Presley’s first album, simply called “Elvis,” hit the stores, changing music forever. But the picture on the front, of a young Elvis singing with all his might, was credited to the wrong person for a very long time!
This iconic photo, full of energy, was actually taken by William V. “Red” Robertson. He snapped it in Tampa, Florida back in July 1955, when Elvis was just 20 years old, shaking up the stage. People thought RCA’s photographer, Popsie Randolph, took it but Popsie’s photos were actually on the back of the album. It took a smart researcher in 2002 to finally set the record straight, giving Red Robertson the credit he deserved for capturing such a powerful moment.
